In the Caribbean Sea the cocktail was available already in 1500 and was named Darquecito in honor of the corsair Francis Drake. Its fame came a few centuries later, when Ernest Hemingway declared that it was his favorite drink. From that moment on, it became more and more famous, and today it is one of the most popular summer drinks.
